A few months ago one of my Brother Knights asked if I would send out a note to the members of Council 9923 and ask them to pray for him because his MS was particularly bad at the time. One of our brothers replied to me and mentioned that we could do a little more for him and the millions of others suffering from Multiple Sclerosis through the National MS Society by joining in the MS Bike-athon.

I loved the idea that we as Knights could live up to our founding principle of Charity in such a concrete way. By raising money for this and other organizations that are in the forefront of helping those in need, we are making it possible for them to do what they do best.

How often have we all said we’d like to help those in need but we wouldn’t know where to begin? There are many organizations that know how to give those in need the care and help they need but they couldn’t do it without the rest of us to help fund their good works.

The MS Ride in September is only the first of the charity rides we will be participating in, there are other events we are already planning to join in the fall and spring.

Another aspect of our efforts will be bringing a Catholic presence to these events by showing our KofC emblems and the SCS name on our cycling jerseys. Imagine what a great evangelization tool it will be to see 25 riders go by with our catholic logos showing people that we are willing to help others. But this kind of Catholic advertising costs money. The jerseys will cost about $ 80 each and after the other biking equipment and hotels, transportation to the events ( the MS ride is a two day event in Callaway Gardens ) and the entry fees, the riders are already being asked to put out a lot of money. So we thought that we could do a little fundraising to foot the bill for some of the startup costs such as the uniforms. One idea was to organize a Spaghetti Dinner.

If you think you could assist us to get TEAM 9923 CYCLING off the ground or if you would like to join the team, please let us know by contacting our team Captain Mark Vettraino at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Think of it as an investment in all our future efforts to ride for charity at many cycling events.
