General

In order to take some of the “myths and mystery” out of any conversation about the Knights of Columbus, we offer the following answers to some of our most “frequently asked questions.”

  • Who may become a Knight?

    General

Any man who is 18 years of age and is a ‘Practical’ Catholic by the standards of the Church and who adheres to the teachings of the Holy See and the Holy Father.

  • I understand “Practical Catholic” and know who the “Holy Father” is, but what is the “Holy See?”

    General

The Holy See is the episcopal jurisdiction of the Bishop of Rome, commonly known as the Pope, and is the preeminent episcopal see of the Catholic Church, forming the central government of the Church.

  • Is the Knights of Columbus a cult?

    General

By definition a cult is comprised of “followers of an unorthodox, extremist, or false religion or sect who often live outside of conventional society under the direction of a charismatic leader.”

And while indeed the Knights do follow a charismatic leader – Jesus Christ - we think you would be hard pressed to apply the definition above to the Catholic Church, the Pope, or the Son of God.

No the Knights of Columbus is not a cult.  It is a fraternal organization of over 1.7 million Catholic men around the globe.  Men who band together as brothers to help one another in times of distress, sickness, and death.

  • But the Knights do have secret ceremonies?

    General

Yes, that is true our ceremonials are kept as a closely guarded secret. These ceremonies have been handed down to us from the earliest days of the Knights and they have very important meanings that would be lost on a candidate that has prior knowledge of the doings of the ceremony.

  • Why so secretive? Can I not tell my wife what “goes on” at meetings and such?

    General

While our ceremonies are in fact kept secret , our meetings are not. During the monthly business meetings we discuss upcoming projects and the things we are doing that are meant to benefit the Parish and the community, so keeping them secret wouldn’t be in our best interest.

  • I know the Knights follow the 10 Commandments, but what to you see as “the Greatest Commandment?”

    General

Our Lord was asked this by the Pharisees and His reply was ‘To love God with all your mind, your body and your Heart . And then Love your neighbor as yourself.

    These are the greatest commandments

  • You talk about Knights following the “precepts of the Church.” What are they?

    General

To observe the feast days appointed by the Church; to hear Mass reverently on these feast days; to observe the fasts on the days during the seasons appointed; to confess to one's pastor annually; to receive Holy Communion at least once a year and that around the feast of Easter.

  • Why was the Knights of Columbus formed?

    General

In 1882 the catholic men in America were being led astray by other non-catholic men’s groups , this coupled with the fact that men had a high risk of being killed on the job, led Father Michael J. McGivney to conceive of a Catholic fraternal order of men who followed the teachings of the Church and whose wives and Families would be provided for in the case of the untimely death of a Knight of Columbus.

  • I have seen the Knights in church all decked out in the hats and capes and swords. What is that all about?

    General

What you have witnessed is known as a Honor Guard. It is made up of only Fourth Degree Knights and is the most visible form of the K of C . The Honor Guard is used at special occasions such as Masses in honor of Conformation , Weddings , and Funerals or to honor a milestone of achievement or special visits of the Archbishop.

  • So if I decide to join the Knights, what’s involved? I mean will it take over my life?

    General

No. The Knights of Columbus are dedicated to five key areas of service – faith, community, family, youth, and fellowship – and while we encourage you to become fully active in the Council, it is understood that there are many demands upon your time.  In short, your involvement with the Knights will be as much or as little as you decide.

  • If I am a Knight does my wife have to be a Columbiette?

    General

While the Knights are a family organization there is no obligation for family members to join the Columbiettes or Columbian Squires, however joining these groups is always greatly encouraged.

  • What sort of activity is Council 9923 involved in?

    General

We tend to concentrate our efforts to improving the parish life of St. Catherine’s, but we also do projects for the community and we support a seminarian . We do fundraisers for our parochial school as well as fundraisers for our council to be able to do the many things we, as Knights hope to accomplish.

  • Do the Knights of Columbus get involved in political activity?

    General

Our bi-laws forbid any partisan politics in our meetings , however we do get involved with issues that many people may believe to be political but in fact are moral issues.  We would include in this support for a “Culture of Life” and a humanitarian policy on immigration.  Other notable accomplishments would be the adding of “under God” to the pledge of allegiance,  and (of course) the recognition of Columbus Day as a national holiday.

  • Who are some of the more “famous” Knights I might have heard of?

    General

President John F. Kennedy was a 4th degree, his brother Senator Ted Kennedy was a 3rd Degree Knight

    • Babe Ruth
    • Vince Lombardi
    • Al Smith
    • Jeb Bush
    • Dozens of politicians and public figures
    • Archbishop Gregory
    • Cardinals, Bishops and Priests too numerous to list
    • Saints , Blessed and Venerable Church figures
    • And more than forty of the Heroes of 911

  • Whom do I contact to join?

    General

While approaching any Knight at Church would do , the best way is to contact our Councils Membership director, Bob Vliek by email at bobv@kofc9923.org or by phone at 770-265-1269.

  • What does it cost?

    General

Our annual dues are $ 30 which helps to defray the costs involved with running the council.

  • Who is the insurance agent for Council 9923?

    General

The insurance contact is Field Agent Vernon Hatcher.  His contact information is on the website under "Who Are Knights."

  • Where can I get a Form 100?

    General

Contact Council Membership Director Bob Vliek at 770-265-1269 or bobv@kofc9923.org.

  • Do I need my membership card to attend the meeting?

    General

Yes.  You may not be allowed to enter without your card in your possession.  Should you need a replacement card contact the Financial Secretary (Brother Mark Tashler) to obtain a new card.

  • When does the council meet.

    General

Business meetings are the 2nd Monday of each month held in room 316/317.

  • Who is the contact for my membership card?

    General

Membership cards are issued by our Financial Secretary Mark Tashler.  His emai is mtashler@kofc9923.org.

  • Where do I get my Council 9923 membership badge?

    General

Membership badges are provided by Brother Tom DeVaux.  Orders for new or replacement badges are to be sent to the Deputy Grand Knight.

  • When may I advance from 1st to 2nd degree Knight?

    General

The short answer is as soon as there is a 2nd degree exemplification offered.  There is no "waiting period" or things to accomplish before a 1st degree Brother can advance.  We encourage you to move to full knighthood (attainment of the 3rd degree) as quickly as you can so that you may fully appreicate all that being a Knight of Columbus means.

  • Where do I find a schedule for upcoming degree ceremonies?

    General

Contact any officer of the council or check the interactive calendar on the council's website. It is our goal to have a 1st degree each month, a 2nd degree every third or fourth month, and a 3rd degree anually here on campus at St. Catherine's.  We do, however, list all the local places hosting degree ceremonies so that you don't have to wait for one here.

  • When may I advance to the 4th degree?

    General

For this degree - the Patriotic Degree - there is a timeframe.  First you must be a 3rd degree Knight and it must have been at least 6 months since you received your 1st degree.
